This old gal…
Breathed in that tangy vinegar smell…cleaning the cabin kitchen…and suddenly there they were…those little ones of mine…sitting at the counter…dying Easter eggs… Active Church goers…attended most doings…loved the fun of holidays…the build up…the preparation…the gifts…but those girls of mine…never forgot…the reason for each season…because a foundation was set… Not so…for little me…only went to Church on holidays…that mother of mine feeling looked down upon…for being divorced…little me embarrassed on those rare days in Sunday School…didn’t know the lesson…didn’t know the Bible stories…but always remembered…the songs…and maybe…that was enough… Jesus loves the little children…all the children of the world…red and yellow black and white…they are precious in His sight…Jesus loves the little children of the world…that song…Jesus loves all the children…no matter the color…or skill…neither rich…or living with a single mom…who wailed and banged her head on the bathroom floor… He loves them all…and what are we…if not…still children…His children…and this…the foundation on which this old life has been built…loving…all the children…those daughters of mine…doing the same… And so…on this Easter Sunday…look into your heart…and regardless of religion or belief…find the love…for all the people of the world…share it…show it…for each is worthy and precious…in someone special’s sight… And those daughters of mine…agree…

Had any question as to what Heaven would smell like…she has no doubt…what it will look like… Traveled south…to visit the birthplace of that husband of mine…backroads only…avoid that San Antonio traffic…suddenly found ourselves driving…down a lonely five mile stretch…of asphalt Heaven…just two old folks…and one gray car…surrounded…by fields and fields…of Texas wildflowers… The mottled sky…unique…the vibrant colors…spectacular…nothing but beauty…as far as the eye could see…it was perfection…sheer…perfection…parked on the side of the road…just to soak it all in…take some pictures…that sidekick of mine…getting a kick…out of taking pictures…of his wife…taking pictures… And those pictures…don’t hold a candle…to the real thing…but pictures or no…the splendor…of that little backroads Texas slice of Heaven…will forever be printed…in the mind…and so it is in life…once in a while…you find…what feels like…perfection…a meal…an outfit…a healthy jog…a day…an hour…a minute… Hold close…those moments…breathe them in…relish them…cherish them…never…let them go… And this husband of mine…agrees… This old gal…
Was chatting with those potluck friends of hers…about Heaven…the query being…what do you suppose Heaven…smells like…one hoped pine…because she loves…the smell of pine…others followed suit…naming this and that…lilac loving me went that route…but down the road…had a change of heart… Paradise would smell like…coffee…freshly brewed…like that in the Mr. Coffee of that dear grandmother of mine…or at a coffee shop…with those Besties of mine… or the morning cup…shared…with that one special person… This old gal…couldn’t go wrong…with coffee…that delightful aroma…reaching out…engulfing her…in a loving…memory filled hug…but then…there’s always that corn chip smell…for any pet lover out there…if you know…you know…cuddle those furry little critters…there it is…breathe it in… And so it is…it’s all about love…the fragrance…of being loved…and the scent…of giving love…and maybe…just maybe…in a place called Paradise…it wouldn’t be too much…to ask…to be blessed…with both… And perhaps…Someone…will agree… This friend of mine…
Shared a book…with reading teacher me…a comic book to be exact…originating from her home country…of Belgium…first published in 1945…it remains a popular comic series to this day…the fantastical stories center around young Suske en Wiske aka Spike and Suzy…bumbling Ambrose…and strongman Jethro… A group of friends…living as a family…who go on grand adventures…and in this specific tale…the grand adventure…takes them…to Texas…read the story…ok…didn’t really reeeeaad…the story…more like read the pictures…but a picture…can tell…a thousand words… And these…tell one of friendship…humor…trust…having fun…saving the day…watching each other’s back…and how perfect this is…this fictional story of years past…hitting home…right here…today…that friend of mine…her adorable Belgian mother here for a visit…reaching out…opening up…chatting…laughing…telling stories… Making this old gal…on her own grand adventure in Texas…feel just…like family… And this husband of mine…agrees… This old gal…
Found it hard to sleep…woke in the night…greeted her midnight feline friend…then lay there…a little heavy hearted…four months have passed…it’s head back north time…pack things up…get a move on…but this year…it feels…different… Three years ago in Texas Town…everything was new…knew nothing…knew no one…this husband and I…were long term tourists…visited this attraction…visited that attraction…tried this eatery…tried that eatery…but this year…things…have morphed… Into comfort…have favorite places…favorite things to do…know the roads…know the backroads…have borrowed pets…have wonderful friends…it feels…like home…and how…do you leave home…to go home…it’s an oxymoron of sorts… But as hard as it is…to say good-bye…there will be sweet hellos…waiting when we get home…and fortunately…those make leaving…just a little bit easier… And this husband of mine…agrees… This husband and I…
Often have a midnight visitor…well…not always midnight…sometimes 1:30…sometimes 3:30…sometimes 1:30 AND 3:30…but most assuredly…during the night…Bawl Baby…does his thing…beneath the bedroom window…yowls and howls…wants one of us to come out…and say hello…and of course she does…peeks out…to check on the boys… Baby…scared of most people…darts to the end of the sidewalk…Best Friend…cozies up…making sure Baby knows…he and the old gal…are best friends…maybe he comes to play…can sometimes hear a game of chase occurring up and down the porch…but it’s more…than just frenemies hanging out…or training an old gal…to deliver a midnight snack… Those eyes…sweet adorable eyes…say…I want to be…in the club…the old people Best Friend club…I want…to get petted…just like…that other cat…and so we have a goal…a kitty cat goal…a next year…kitty cat goal…let Baby think he tricked us into petting him…and let jealous Best Friend think…it…was his…idea… And this husband of mine…agrees… A dear friend…
Shared a writing about aging…on how no matter how old an old gal looks…deep down…she’s the same person she was…years ago… Can’t tell you how many times never-grow-old-inside me…zippety doo dahs here…and then a tendon pops…or feels footloose and fancy free…until a muscle pulls….don’t even go there…where the wrinkly old thing smiles back at you in a reflection somewhere…can pretend it’s not happening…ignore the truth…but there’s really…no escaping it… Like that photo sent recently…by that daughter of mine…look…she says…that vintage raincoat of yours…vintage raincoat…vintage…raincoat…that once brand new North Face raincoat…is now…cough cough…vintage… But…you are only as young as you feel…decided to primp a bit…get the toenails done…a gift from those daughters of mine…made a note of the time…10:30…Med…then realized the error…pedicure…not Medicare…where the H E double hockey sticks…did that word come from… Young whippersnapper me…has no…idea… And this husband of mine…agrees… |
