This husband of mine…
Turned and said…well…are you ready to go make fools of ourselves…like this is something new…like old people us…don’t do it every single day… Heading into a museum…the local museum…highlighting the history…of our little Texas town…he…being prodded to come…by that beautiful wife of his… Have noticed a pattern…museum goers us…go during the week…go during the off season…go…when…apparently…no one else…goes…the curator…aways shocked…and pleased…to see someone walk in…offers a personal intro to the exhibit…lucky us…get the place…to ourselves… And so…us fools…rush in…no fooling around…enjoy that museum fools’ paradise…reading captions…googling more facts…cuz experience…is the teacher of fools…and we all know… There’s no fool…like an old fool…no foolin… And apparently…that husband of mine…agrees…

This husband and I…
Had lunch…in a cute little bar and grill in Gonzales…the place was quiet…a song…echoed through the rafters…Taylor Swift…not the recent in the news Taylor Swift…but the Taylor Swift…of yore… Those young ladies…and their mama…life in a shambles…infidelity…divorce…new home…coupled with teen and preteen heartaches…it was a sad time…a sadder than sad time…but the four of us…had each other…and we had…Taylor Swift…her CD Fearless…filling the car…with each drive… Girl voices…crooning her songs…together…like we did everything…together…ending always with The Best Day…knowing…the four of us…would somehow…make it… And so it was…this mama’s heart…a little squishy…hearing that song…suddenly missing those girls of hers…but what would you know…a few hours later…let’s all send a selfie…one of them says…and so we do…the fearless four…so far away…yet together again…and to this old mama… It was…the best day…ever… And those daughters of mine…agree… This husband and I…
Headed to the Gonzales Historical Museum…in search of that famous…Come and Take It cannon…an integral symbol…in regards to the start…of the Texas Revolution…the story something like…the Mexicans…gave the cannon to the settlers…to protect themselves from Native Americans… Then wanted it back…when they started to bicker…sent some soldiers to get it…but the few Gonzales settlers refused to give it back with a…come and take it…the rest…they say…is history…this husband of mine…got the biggest kick out of the fact…that the cannon…was just a teeny thing…with a teeny hole…for teeny bullets…this…he exclaimed…this little thing…is what they fought over… But isn’t that the way it is in life…those things…we are willing to fight over…may seem little to one…but not…to others…family…friends…honor…morals.. It’s ok…to stand up…for those we love…stand up…to that…that threatens…to stand up…for all that’s good… And this husband of mine…agrees… This husband of mine…
Came out of hibernation…warmer weather setting in…suggested a road trip…to Gonzales…intrigued by the legend…of Gregorio Cortez…having watched a movie about him…starring James Olmos…wanted to visit…the County Jail Museum… Had the place to ourselves…stepping across the threshold…like walking back in time…the rooms…rich in history…the etched walls…telling stories of the past…could envision…the movie being filmed there…could think further back…to the pain suffered…by the actual man…his life…and that of his family’s…irrevocably changed… Over a misunderstanding…a misinterpretation…a…dreadful…mistake… And so it is…in life…the importance of communication…transparency…honesty…being open with your needs…being open…about the needs…of others…leaving judgement behind… Listen…open your eyes…open your heart…see…and hear…what is truly…being said… And this husband of mine…agrees… This old gal…
Was struck by a photo that popped up…in Facebook memories…not drawn to the photo exactly…but more…the headline created by that then high school daughter of mine… Yay family… Started a new puzzle a few hours later…and there that word was again…family…family puzzle…large and small pieces…so all…can work together…all…can feel accomplished…all…can have fun… And there it is…family…can mean anything…born into…born of…spouses…coworkers…neighbors…BFFs…blog buddies…kitties…puppies…squishaboo pets…you choose them…they choose you…you choose…each other…those peeps…that are there for you…supporting you…helping you feel safe…supported…loved…they…are family… For you are jolly good fellows…hip hip hooray…we celebrate you… Yay…family… And those daughters of mine…agree… This old gal…
Was in a Christmas quandary…have always given those daughters of hers…a Christmas ornament in their stockings…a bauble…to highlight the year…followed the tradition of days gone by…mouse collector me…each year…getting a cute little mouse ornament…for her future family tree… Mama me began the perfect ornament search…when a thought hit…maybe…those grown up gals of mine…want to do their tree…their way…maybe it’s time…the ornament tradition…no longer be…a tradition…but maybe…it should start next year…after those Harry Potter fanatics…get this one last plastic…mystery ornament memory… But then…just as this old heart…was letting go of the age old tradition…what to my wondering eyes should appear…a sign…sent by that youngest sweetie of mine…an ornament…a mouse ornament…whispering…Old Gal…no one is ever too old…for a Christmas tradition…and no tree is ever too small…for one…more…mouse… And that daughter of mine…agrees… This old gal…
Got a surprise in the mail…from a friend…a dear friend…a go all the way back to college…friend…I saw this and thought of you…the note said…and snuggled in the box…was the most adorable hippy llama mug…certainly screaming this old gal’s name… Remembered another little note…sent with a box not long ago…saying…these fun little things reminded me of you…I had to get them…and sure enough…that daughter of mine…hitting it on the nose…flavored chapsticks…mini squishies…and those napkins…their magical mom’s namesake… I thought of you… Powerful words…calming words…healing the soul…kind of words…how many people…do you suppose…one thinks about…in a day…a week…a month…so when a happy little trigger…brings someone to mind…let them know…make their day…with a call…a text…a handwritten note… Take this old gal’s word for it…it will make their heart happy…and no doubt…if you think about it…it will make yours…happy too… And this husband of mine…agrees… This husband and I…
Went out for coffee…surprisingly to Buc-ee’s…cuz they have the best old people coffee ever…not a bitter note to be found…old gal driver me came to a red light…needed to turn right…go east on a four lane…it was that split second…where all cars are stopped…but the traffic going east and west would go imminently… Could…turn right on red…floor it…try to beat the automobile stampede…but…chose to hold back…and that’s when the horn honked…the big F-150 so close…Flat Stanley couldn’t squeeze between…got the green light…and as expected…The Beast sped around…like they always do…when they feel they’ve been inconvenienced…by yet another old person idiot driver… But joke was on him…cuz a mile up the road…was a stoplight…and who did this old gal pull up beside…The Beast…crabby old rushypants him…not getting any farther…than us pokey old ladies… And so it is with life…chill out…keep calm and carry on…take a jaunt to Buc-ee’s…who will welcome you…with open arms…tasty coffee…and lots and lots of love… And that beaver friend of mine…agrees… This old gal...
Came across a Valentine giveaway on Instagram…don’t do the giveaways usually…cuz old gal me…doesn’t know how to navigate…the Instagram thing…can’t tag…or share…not easily at least…but this artist…is a favorite of all time…classroom full of her decor…posters…calendars…bulletin board borders… Not to mention trinkets and doodads…all in her signature designs and colors…blacks…reds…pinks…greens…cherries…cherries…and more…cherries…no longer have the classroom…but search for her items at thrift stores…flea markets…antique shops…some of her stuff…like this old gal…is now considered vintage… So decided to go out on a limb…take a risk…tag that daughter of mine…share and comment…and what would you know…a box…from Mary Engelbreit…artist extraordinaire…showed up…just before the big day… And so it is in life…sometimes…you just gotta take a chance…give it a try…cuz you just never know…you might end up… A winner winner…chicken dinner… And that husband of mine…agrees… This husband and I…
Returned to the park…where the sidewalk ends…beautiful cobblestone path…leading to the river…suddenly morphing into a drop off…of gnarled nastiness…looks like work had been done…to cover the horrid mess…but sadly didn’t try to retain the integrity…of that sidewalk piece of art… The patch…concrete…rough…choppy…tire mark fossils…from the leveler machine…feet and feet…of that magical stone path…finishing off…painfully…and so it is…in life…that journey…like a cobblestone path…twisting here…twisting there…the story it tells…for the most part…lovely… But as you near the end of that path…life’s path…it can get…a bit rocky…unsettling…aging…health…finances…not as pretty…not…as serene…but look closely…at where the sidewalk ends…then move your gaze beyond the edge…for it doesn’t end at all…it instead…moves forward… Flowing…like a river…glistening…peaceful…it’s not an ending at all…but instead…it’s a beautiful new…beginning… And this husband of mine…agrees… |
